Everything you need for a successful road trip

Travelling by car affords you the freedom to explore new horizons at your own pace and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Whether it’s an adventure-packed road trip or a family weekend getaway, good planning is essential to a safe and enjoyable journey.

To help you have a memorable, worry-free time on the road, Promutuel Insurance has a list of essentials to check off before you set off for your next vacation.

1. Essential documents to pack

First and foremost, be sure to pack all the necessary documents: driver’s licence, registration certificate, and proof of insurance. A little unexpected event can quickly become a real headache if you don’t have these important documents on hand. Also consider making a digital copy in case they get lost!

2. Onboard comfort and well-being

A trip by car means hours on the road! To make the experience enjoyable for all passengers, it’s best to make sure everyone is comfortable. Here are some tips to ensure the comfort and well-being of everyone on board:

  • Cushions and blankets for maximum comfort, especially if you’re travelling at night.
  • Navigation tools to avoid unnecessary detours and traffic jams.

Tip: Want to take advantage of your road trip to optimize your driving? Some insurers offer a telematics app that tracks your driving in real time to reward your good habits, like Promutuel Insurance with its Appi program. Contact us to sign up and download the app before you leave!

  • Snacks and drinks: Include healthy options such as nuts, fruit and nutrition bars, so you can space out your stops as much as possible. If you’re driving, when you stop to eat, choose a light meal to avoid driver fatigue.

3. Entertainment: The key to a pleasant trip

While it’s nice to admire the scenery on the road, boredom can unfortunately set in during a long drive. To maintain a good vibe on board and make the time go by more quickly, include the following:

  • Music playlists: Prepare a selection of your favourite songs or take the opportunity to discover new ones.
  • Movies and series: Consider downloading content in advance to keep passengers busy, especially the little ones.
  • Audiobooks and podcasts: These are perfect for making the trip all the more interesting.

• Games: Travelling with young children? Entertain young and old passengers alike with guessing games, such as I spy with my little eye and 20 questions. Take along books, stickers, and other car-friendly toys to keep them busy.

4. Preparing your car and its equipment

To avoid unpleasant surprises and unscheduled visits to the garage, you need to do a quick inspection of your car before you set off:

  • Tire pressure and condition: This includes the spare tire (click on the link to learn how to install it quickly and safely on the road).
  • Oil and fluids: Check the levels of all fluids and make sure your car isn’t due for an oil change any time soon.
  • First-aid kit and emergency kit: Gather all the items you might need for any unforeseen circumstances on the road, including a first-aid kit, blankets, tools, water bottles, non-perishable food, a flashlight, etc.
  • Loading luggage: Be sure to place your luggage in the trunk of your car so that it doesn’t obstruct the driver’s field of vision. Also, avoid loading the passenger compartment with bags or other loose items that could become dangerous projectiles if there’s an accident or sudden stop.
  • Accessories: If you have a cargo carrier, bike rack, or trailer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use, as well as the loading capacity of the unit and your car.

5. The right car insurance for peace of mind

Even if you plan your vacations carefully and take all the necessary precautions, unfortunately you’re not totally immune to incidents. Car insurance can save you a lot of trouble if something unexpected happens on the road. Here are some things to check before you leave:

  • Level of coverage: Check the coverage of your car insurance policy and the areas it covers. If these aren’t sufficient or if you have any questions, feel free to contact your damage insurance representative. Please note that if you use your car outside Québec for any length of time, you must inform your insurer.
  • Good to know: If you’re planning a road trip to the United States, it is generally recommended that you have at least $2 million in liability coverage under your car insurance. If you unfortunately have a car accident in the U.S., the amount of damage you could be held liable for could be very high.
  • Little extras: Some additional coverage can make your road trip easier if there’s an incident. This is the case with the Travel expenses endorsement, which covers your rental costs for a replacement vehicle and cab and public transit fares if a covered loss deprives you of your car. Will you be driving a rented or borrowed vehicle?
  • covers damage you may be liable for to vehicles rented or borrowed in Canada and the United States!
